Type "Kathmandu to Pokhara" in Google Maps and it gives you a tidy number: about 200 kilometers. On a flat highway, that's a two-hour drive. But in this route, it might take a full day. Most of the confusion first-time travelers run into starts right there, so let's sort out the real numbers before you book anything.

By road, it's roughly 200 to 206 kilometers, depending on which end of the highway system you measure from. By air, the same trip is closer to 146 kilometers. That gap is basically Nepal's terrain talking.
All of the road distance runs along one route: the Prithvi Highway, also known as NH04, which connects Naubise at the edge of the Kathmandu Valley to Prithivi Chowk in Pokhara.
